Alabama's stretch of the Tennessee River isn't one undifferentiated river — it's three distinct tailwater reaches below TVA dams: below Guntersville Dam, below Wheeler Dam, and below Wilson Dam ("the Shoals"). In all three, TVA's generation releases flush shad, insects, and crustaceans downstream and trigger feeding frenzies, and bass, sauger, and striper hold behind current breaks facing into the flow. This is not Pickwick Dam itself, which sits physically across the state line in Hardin County, Tennessee.
Tennessee River — three TVA-regulated tailwater reaches in North Alabama
Alabama's Tennessee River is best understood as three separate tailwater fisheries rather than one long river: below Guntersville Dam (flowing into Wheeler Reservoir), below Wheeler Dam (flowing into Wilson Reservoir), and below Wilson Dam ("the Shoals," flowing into the head of Pickwick Reservoir). Pickwick Dam itself is not an Alabama tailrace — it sits in Hardin County, Tennessee.
Below Guntersville Dam
TVA generation releases below Guntersville Dam create swift current that flushes shad, insects, and crustaceans downstream, triggering feeding frenzies. Bass and other game fish hold behind current breaks, facing into the flow — the same generation-driven pattern found at all three Alabama tailraces on this river.

Sauger are functionally restricted to the Tennessee River system in Alabama and are present in this tailrace, though the state-record fish came from the Wilson Dam tailwater downstream.

Below Wilson Dam (the Shoals)
ADCNR describes this reach as "the only riverine reach remaining in the vicinity of Muscle Shoals" — a stretch with unusually high mussel diversity and the swift current typical of TVA generation releases, flowing into the head of Pickwick Reservoir. Access is a mix of wade, bank, and boat fishing, including ADA-accessible piers below both Wilson and Wheeler dams.
