Wilson Lake is a 15,500-acre TVA reservoir on the Tennessee River, closed by Wilson Dam in 1924 — the oldest dam under TVA administration — and fished nationally for big smallmouth between Wheeler Dam upstream and Wilson Dam at Florence.
Wilson runs fifteen miles of Tennessee River between two dams. Wheeler Dam at river mile 274.9 sits at the top of the pool. Wilson Dam at mile 259.4 closes the bottom end at Florence, and that dam is the reason Wilson Lake exists at all — the US Army Corps of Engineers finished it in 1924, a decade before TVA was created, and it became the first dam the agency ever administered when the Tennessee Valley Authority took over in 1933. A National Historic Landmark today. The pool is short, deep, and narrow by TVA standards, but it fishes bigger than its acreage because current runs through it almost constantly. Smallmouth stack below Wheeler Dam on cold chunk rock and gravel bars. Main-lake ledges drop to ninety feet — the deepest water of any Alabama TVA reservoir. The pool spans Lauderdale, Colbert, and Lawrence counties, and Florence anchors the south bank where anglers launch for Wheeler tailrace mornings.

Seasonal Playbook
March through May Wilson turns on the moment water climbs into the fifties. Pre-spawn smallmouth stage on gravel points and the chunk-rock transitions just below Wheeler Dam — a suspending jerkbait on long pauses catches fish from the low fifties through about sixty degrees. March into early April is peak sauger in the Wheeler tailrace; a 3/8-ounce jig tipped with a curly-tail grub bounced through the current seam gets bit when bass fishermen are still looking for them. Largemouth slide into the creek arms on Shoal Creek and Town Creek once the surface pushes mid-sixties — spinnerbait, ChatterBait, and lizards work the transition from flats to spawning pockets. White bass run up the Wheeler tailrace with the sauger in late March and early April. By late April the shad spawn hits main-lake rip-rap below the Highway 72 bridge and at McFarland Park; a walking bait or a small buzzbait at first light on rip-rap cleans bags when the sun's still low.
June through August Wilson fishes like moving river. Smallmouth push out to main-channel ledges between First Creek and Wilson Dam in 18-28 feet — some fish hold deeper, on ledges that fall to 50-60 feet, because the pool is the deepest in the Alabama TVA system. Football jigs in watermelon-red, deep-diving crankbaits that tick at 18-20 feet, and magnum worms on Carolina rigs produce when TVA runs current. Current matters more than time of day on Wilson. When two or three generators kick on at Wheeler or Wilson Dam, fish stack on the break; slack water scatters them. Largemouth hang in the back of Shoal Creek and Town Creek on grass-to-wood transitions — swim jig at dawn, frog over mats through mid-morning. The night bite is real below the Highway 72 bridge pilings at McFarland Park — a dark spinnerbait or jig-head worm moves big fish through July and August when the surface pushes mid-eighties. Thermocline sets around 20 feet by late August.
September through November Wilson runs the fall migration through the creek mouths. Shad pull off the main river into Shoal Creek, Town Creek, and Cypress Creek, and smallmouth and largemouth follow them in on the same transitions. A lipless crankbait ripped through grass, a ChatterBait in shad color, and a medium-diving crankbait on secondary-point rock all produce into mid-November. Brian Barton's September-to-November window on Wilson is his published best on the calendar — afternoon bite on live shad below Wheeler Dam once TVA starts generating maximum flow around 1 p.m., 18-22 pound best-five bags for smallmouth, trophy catfish dropping skipjack chunks over ledges in 75-90 feet of water. Striper schools break up on the main river chasing shad balls on calm mornings. By Thanksgiving the ledge fish tighten to the outside edge and a swimbait slow-wound just off bottom produces when the surface bite dies.
December through February the Wheeler Dam tailrace is the best fishing on the lake. Oxygenated current, concentrated baitfish, and wintering sauger, white bass, and smallmouth all stack in the same few hundred yards of water below the dam at the top of the Wilson pool. A 3/8-ounce hair jig or a small bucktail drifted on light line through the current seam is the classic play — smallmouth and sauger eat the same presentation. Heavy jigging spoons worked vertically through schools of shad on sonar produce when fish won't hit horizontal baits. Away from the tailrace, smallmouth group on main-channel chunk rock and ledges in 25-45 feet and respond to a float-and-fly, a drop-shot on light line, or an Alabama rig once the surface drops below 50°F. Wilson's depth helps hold fish through cold fronts — the 60-90 foot ledge water at the middle of the pool barely changes temperature through February. Pick bright afternoons after a warming trend and expect the feeding window to open.

March is one of my favorite months for big fish. The only hiccup you have is the weather is changing. But if things line up, it could be the best time to be on Pickwick. You'll have a lot of staging female largemouth that are deciding that it is time to feed up and make the transition to the spawning areas.
The pattern: Washam's March 2025 Bassmaster preview for the B.A.S.S. Nation Qualifier (Pickwick-Wilson inbounds from McFarland Park) said spring smallmouth would stack in the Wilson Dam tailrace — which actually drops into the Pickwick pool — and green fish would bite from the Wilson Dam up to the Pickwick Dam on main-lake and secondary points, gravel bars, laydowns, stumps, and rock. Wilson-pool application: the same tailrace current-and-gravel pattern mirrors the Wheeler Dam tailrace at the TOP of Wilson, which is Wilson's own best pre-spawn smallmouth water.

Late August has produced a lot of trophy catfish over the years. Best bet is Wilson Lake dropping large chunks of skipjack over ledges in 75 to 90 feet of water. Crappie will start to move farther up the creeks in search of bait.
The pattern: Barton's August Wilson catfish pattern: skipjack chunks on main-channel ledges in 75-90 feet. Wilson's depth makes this possible — no other Alabama TVA reservoir has 90-foot ledge water mid-pool. Trophy blue and channel cats set up on those breaks when the thermocline pins bait to the deep water in late August. Wilson lesson: the deepest water in the AL TVA system is where trophy catfish live in summer — skipjack on the ledge, not shallow stinkbait.

It's finally here. The fall live bait fishing season has arrived. From now till late November will be Pickwick and Wilson Lakes finest fall fishing. From the results of my last few September trips, it's going to be special. Clients have boated 25 plus smallmouth bass, not to mention numerous other fish this last week. Best 5 fish averaging weights of 18-22 pounds. Threadfin shad are easily avaliable with the use of a livescope below either dam. Afternoon bite is best, due to TVA generating maximum flow from about 1 pm till after dark.
The pattern: Barton's 2023 Wilson October forecast posts the measurable Wilson-pool fall smallmouth pattern: cast-net or livescope threadfin shad below Wheeler Dam, fish them in the current seam, and weigh 18-22 pound best-fives through November. TVA generation schedule drives the bite — peak flow from about 1 p.m. to after dark is when smallmouth stack. Fall Wilson lesson: afternoon live-shad trip below Wheeler Dam, not a morning run to the creeks.

September officially kicks off the fall live bait season. The young shad are beginning to school in large numbers, and most are now large enough to be collected in a 3/8" mesh cast net. Fish of all types are starting to congergate below the dams, mouths of creeks, and large main lake flats gorging on the young shad. All you need for fast fall action is a cast net, live bait tank, and some medium action spinning tackle. Catfish and white bass will be in their largest concentrations in the tailraces. For largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass, they will be anywhere the bait is.
The pattern: Barton's September Wilson setup: 3/8-inch mesh cast net and a live-bait tank — the Wheeler Dam tailrace, creek mouths, and main-lake flats all hold fish on young shad. Medium-action spinning tackle instead of heavy bass rods because the bite window includes everything from white bass and catfish in the tailrace to smallmouth on the flats. Wilson lesson: September is the setup month for Wilson's signature October-November live-shad window — start cast-netting shad now.

Court Street and Mobile Street carry full-service lodging and restaurants after weigh-in. Wilson Dam itself is the draw across the river at mile 259.4 — National Historic Landmark, first TVA dam, overlook access on both banks. North across the pool, Sheffield and Muscle Shoals hold the south-bank music scene: FAME Recording Studios on Avalon Avenue, Muscle Shoals Sound Studio at 3614 Jackson Highway in Sheffield, and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and Helen Keller's Birthplace down in Tuscumbia. Thirty minutes east, Joe Wheeler State Park at 4401 McLean Drive in Rogersville anchors the TOP of the Wilson pool at Wheeler Dam — the lodge, 116-site campground, and marina put anglers on the Wheeler tailrace in ten minutes.
