What is Wheeler Lake best known for?

Crappie and tournament bass. Wheeler is one of the Southeast's most productive crappie fisheries thanks to miles of standing timber in Limestone Bay and Round Island, and the Decatur Flats produce tournament-winning largemouth limits every spring and fall.

What ramp should I use on Wheeler Lake?

Ingalls Harbor in Decatur is the primary tournament launch and the Alabama Bass Trail and MLF BFL Wild Card Regional weigh-in site. Joe Wheeler State Park Ramp in Rogersville is the best access for Wheeler Dam tailrace smallmouth. Point Mallard Park and Flint Creek cover the east end of the Decatur Flats.

When is the best time to fish Wheeler?

March through May for the crappie spawn in Limestone Bay and Round Island, the white-bass run up the Wheeler Dam tailrace and the Elk River, and pre-spawn bass on the Decatur Flats. October through early December is the second-best window for aggressive shad-chasing bass and pre-winter crappie.

Do I need a license to fish Wheeler Lake?

Yes. All anglers over age 16 need an Alabama fishing license regardless of residency. Daily, weekly, and annual licenses are available online from ADCNR or at any local tackle shop.

Is Wheeler Lake in the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge?

Parts of the shoreline are within Wheeler NWR, which wraps significant portions of the middle pool between Decatur and the Wheeler Dam tailrace. The refuge enforces seasonal waterfowl closures in certain backwater areas — verify current refuge rules before fishing posted zones in fall and winter.

The Water

Wheeler runs 60 miles of Tennessee River from the base of Guntersville Dam west to Wheeler Dam near Rogersville, held back by TVA since 1936 and wrapped on both banks by the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. Decatur sits in the middle of the pool and anchors every tournament the lake hosts — the Decatur Flats, Ingalls Harbor, and the old river channel all launch from here. Crappie is the signature species. Standing timber in Round Island, Limestone Bay, and the upper-lake creek arms stacks black and white crappie every spring, and guides run boats from here to Huntsville to catch them. Bass follow close behind: Laker Howell won the 2025 Bassmaster Elite Qualifier on the Decatur Flats throwing a Livingston topwater over a shell saddle, and Matt Adams ran the Guntersville Dam tailrace for the same event. Smallmouth stack below Wheeler Dam itself, and sauger and white bass push up both tailraces every winter.

Seasonal Playbook

March through May is Wheeler's headline season. Water climbs from the mid-50s into the 70s, crappie stack on timber before the spawn, and bass move from the main river into the creek arms. Mid-March through mid-April: black crappie pull onto stumps and standing timber in Limestone Bay, Round Island, and the Wheeler Refuge backwaters — 1/16-ounce jigs under a slip float or minnows on a drop-shot get bit in 5-12 feet. Pre-spawn bass stage on secondary points and gravel bars below Wheeler Dam and out of the Decatur Flats on Vision 110 jerkbaits with long pauses. Late April into May the shad spawn triggers topwater on Ingalls Harbor rip-rap and main-lake bridge pilings at first light, and the Alabama Bass Trail North Division runs Wheeler out of Ingalls Harbor most years. White bass run up both the Wheeler Dam tailrace and the Elk River mouth on shad schools — rooster tails and 1/4-ounce spoons clean limits.

Southern Open presented by Oakley on Wheeler Lake (1st place, 45 lbs 8 oz)

This was my first tournament on Wheeler. I didn't have any idea what to do. I launched my boat, found a fairly large creek that had everything I thought I'd need and fished it every day. That was a great spot. It had deep water around it and a little grass right on top. I threw a 5/8-ounce Chatterbait out over the top and brought it back real fast, just under the water. I had to keep it moving to prevent it from fouling in the grass. It seemed like the better bass wanted something moving along fairly fast.

The pattern: Payne's 45-8 Wheeler Southern Open win came on a small hump off a spawning flat inside a lower-lake creek — deep water around a shallow rise with grass on top. A 5/8-ounce chartreuse-and-white ChatterBait burned just under the surface moved the better postspawn bass. When that bite slowed he switched to a bone Heddon Zara Spook Jr. on the edges of the same hump. Wheeler postspawn lesson: the better bass want speed over the grass, not a slow drag.

Bassmaster Southern Open at Wheeler Lake (2nd place, 41 lbs 6 oz)

I started fishing gravel points and drops in the entrances to spawning bays. I caught a lot of fish, but at the end of the first day I switched from a Carolina rig to a Strike King Pro Model Series 6 crankbait in Sexy Shad and caught a good one deeper than I'd been fishing. I realized then that the winning weights were behind me. On the second day I moved out to the main lake, into 7-9 feet of water. I whacked them fishing the same bait on the same type of structure.

The pattern: Menendez's 41-6 runner-up pattern moved from spawning-bay entrance gravel points to main-lake 7-9 foot structure with a Strike King Pro Model Series 6 crankbait in Sexy Shad. Wheeler postspawn lesson: when the creek-mouth bite peters out, slide to main-lake drops in 7-10 feet with the same crankbait — the bigger postspawn fish push out before most anglers do.

Bassmaster Southern Open at Wheeler Lake (3rd place, 40 lbs 12 oz)

Every morning I'd get a quick limit with a chartreuse and white Chatterbait from a shallow shoreline grass edge. Then I'd start fishing for bigger fish in the hope of culling a heavy limit. I caught most of those skipping a Sweet Beaver under and behind flooded, shallow bushes. I found the fish in practice around bushes in water about a foot deep. But every time I tried to get close enough to flip or pitch to them I'd run them off. I finally developed a pattern of skipping my bait to them from deep water.

The pattern: McCaig's 40-12 third-place Wheeler pattern used a chartreuse-and-white ChatterBait on shoreline grass for quick limits, then a black-and-red Sweet Beaver skipped under flooded shallow bushes for kicker cullers. Wheeler shallow lesson: on pressured bushes in a foot of water, anglers spook the fish long before a pitch — skip the bait in from deep water and it stays wet long enough to get bit.

Bassmaster Elite Series preview at Wheeler Lake (2024)

When you find a bar that has gizzards on it, you take a 17-pound bag up to 24 pounds. You'll have to have several little places and have a milk run.

The pattern: Alabama pro and Wheeler local Sam George's early-summer ledge lesson: gizzard shad, not threadfins, are what turn a 17-pound bag into 24. Graph multiple offshore bars, mark the ones holding gizzards, and build a milk-run circuit of 4–6 spots. One ledge won't carry a day here — rotation does.

2025 Nitro Boats Bassmaster Elite Qualifier at Wheeler Lake (Oct)

The fish would come off the main river and funnel in. The best I can figure, there's current in there that sets them up. They get on that shell and feed on the shad as they come through. I hadn't had a bite in there before 8 a.m. and this morning, in the first 10 minutes, I caught a 5-pounder that blew up 10 feet from the boat. I never left that area. I got six blow ups today and I missed one.

The pattern: Howell's 65-11 three-day total and Classic-qualifying Wheeler EQ win came off a shell saddle on the Decatur Flats 2 miles from Ingalls Harbor. He caught every fish on a bone-colored Livingston Lures Walking Boss topwater. Key lesson for Wheeler fall topwater: find a hard-bottom saddle between two bars near the main river channel where current funnels shad over the spot, and stay on it.

2025 Nitro Boats Bassmaster Elite Qualifier at Wheeler Lake (Oct — 2nd place)

For some reason, this morning, it just didn't happen. I noticed that fish were coming up and going down. They wouldn't commit completely. I caught one that was a little over 4, a 3-pounder and a couple small fish. I had to run everything I had. I caught a 5-pounder on a bar downriver from the tailrace, then I ran all the way back up to my starting spot and caught two good ones. I wish I'd had another hour to fish (the tailrace).

The pattern: Adams led Days 1-2 of the 2025 Wheeler EQ with 23-14 and 22-8 fishing a specific current break at the Guntersville Dam tailrace (top of the Wheeler pool). When the tailrace pattern broke down on Championship Saturday, he scrambled to 19-3 on a Sixth Sense 300 DD deep crankbait and a Sixth Sense Shad on a 3/16-ounce jighead and finished second by two ounces. Wheeler tailrace lesson: when flow shifts, have a deep-crank + jighead minnow backup ready on the nearest downriver bar.

MLF Toyota Series Championship preview — Wheeler Lake (Nov 2024)

In November, you can win from one dam to the other. Even without massive grass flats like we had in the old days, the Flats still has a stronger population than anywhere else on the lake. Early November is usually a really good time to be fishing Wheeler, and it's a great month for topwaters.

The pattern: Brent Crow's November Wheeler playbook: Decatur Flats (below I-65 down to Browns Ferry) is still the highest-density population on the lake even with the grass thinned out. Work it with walking baits, plopping topwaters, and a buzzbait. Caveat: 3-foot wind kills the topwater bite and muddies the Flats — have a ChatterBait / spinnerbait backup ready when the east or west wind runs against the current.

MLF Fishery Spotlight — Wheeler Lake (Nov 2024)

Some of the best places to target bass in the fall would be in the current breaks, points and creeks that come into the lake. The fish should heavily relate to the current on the main lake, especially in November as they focus on shad. The lake has an excellent population of both threadfin and gizzard shad.

The pattern: The ADCNR District 1 Fisheries Supervisor's fall rule for Wheeler: below Decatur fishes like a lake, above Decatur fishes like a river. In the lower half, target current breaks, main-lake points, and creek mouths — that's where shad-feeding bass set up in November. Smallmouth population is now strong end-to-end, not just the two dam areas — any rocky current break is a candidate.
