Lake Catoma is Cullman's drinking water, first and always. The City of Cullman Utilities Board dammed Eightmile Creek in 1966 to build a 536-acre reservoir that now supplies raw and finished water to Cullman County and parts of Winston and Morgan counties. That's the whole reason the lake exists, and the rules on the water reflect it. City Ordinance 2018-36 caps every boat at 25 horsepower on the water-supply lake, Ordinance 2008-05 regulates the rest, and the city posts a single public boat ramp at 1815 3rd St NE on the north side of Cullman. There's no resort shoreline, no marina row, no weekend wake traffic — the horsepower cap keeps the lake small-boat. Fishing is honest small-reservoir Alabama: largemouth bass and crappie are the headline fish per the City's visitor guide, with bluegill, longear sunfish, spotted gar, channel catfish, and flathead catfish filling out the species list. March through May is the best stretch of the year on Lake Catoma. The lake warms fast because it's shallow and small, largemouth push into the Eightmile Creek inflow and the mid-pool timber to stage and spawn, and crappie slide onto shoreline brush and the upper-end timber by mid-March. A square-bill crankbait on the creek-mouth gravel, a wacky-rigged Senko in the laydowns, and a long-lined 1/16-ounce crappie jig through the upper timber carries the pre-spawn bite. Bluegill and longear sunfish bed on shallow clay and gravel from mid-April through May — crickets and a small popper handle the bream end. The 25-HP motor cap (Cullman Ordinance 2018-36) keeps the water calm on weekends. City of Cullman rules are posted under Ordinance 2008-05; confirm current fishing-permit and launch rules with the city before the first trip of the year.
June through August the lake gets hot and weedy. Largemouth go early-and-late — a buzzbait or a Zara Spook on the shoreline pockets at first light, a Texas-rigged worm flipped into the laydowns by mid-morning, and a drop-shot on the deeper water near the dam when the sun climbs. Channel and flathead catfish turn on after sundown in the main pool; cut bait or live bream on a slip-sinker rig off the ramp bank or the dam area is the night pattern. Crappie suspend on timber tops in 8-15 feet in the creek arms. Bluegill stay on the bank all day; small poppers and crickets under a bobber work the kids' pattern off the ramp. Water-supply status keeps the shoreline undeveloped, so shade and cover hold fish through the heat — and the 25-HP cap keeps pleasure traffic minimal even on summer weekends.
September through November the lake cools and the bite reorganizes. Shad move into the Eightmile Creek arm, largemouth follow them onto the creek-mouth flats and the mid-pool timber edges, and a lipless crankbait worked parallel to the bank, a ChatterBait on the transition flats, and a jig on the isolated laydowns catches the fall pattern. Crappie reload on timber tops in 10-15 feet through October; a small jig tipped with a minnow, vertical on marked schools, pulls consistent fish as the water drops into the 60s. Catfish stay active on the bottom in the main pool — nightcrawlers and cut bait on a slip sinker hold up into November, best in the last hour before dark. Water clarity improves as the summer weed die-off clears the pool, and bluegill hold on shoreline brush on crickets and small poppers. Weekday fall afternoons are the quietest water of the year at Catoma — the single ramp and 25-HP cap keep the crowd small and local.
December through February the lake slows down. Largemouth and crappie group on the deepest water available near the dam and on the mid-pool timber tops; a suspending jerkbait worked on long pauses on sunny afternoons, a small jig-and-minnow vertical over marked crappie schools, and a shaky head dragged slow on the bottom pull the winter bite. Catfish stay catchable on cut bait fished slow on the bottom in the main pool. Bream and sunfish slow way down — a wax worm on a tiny jig off the ramp works occasionally on the warmest winter afternoons. The 25-HP motor cap and the small pool mean winter traffic is essentially nil; some weekday afternoons you'll have the lake to yourself. Confirm current access hours and any winter drawdown or ordinance changes with the City of Cullman Utilities Board before making a cold-weather trip.

Lake Catoma sits on the north side of downtown Cullman, maybe five minutes off I-65 exit 308 and the easy pit stop between Birmingham and Huntsville. Cullman punches above its weight on North Alabama attractions. Ave Maria Grotto, on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey just a few minutes from the lake, is a four-acre landscaped hillside of miniature stone reproductions of famous religious buildings built by Brother Joseph Zoettl — a one-of-a-kind stop and the reason Cullman shows up on scenic-drive maps. Clarkson Covered Bridge, a National Register-listed 1904 covered bridge over Crooked Creek, sits about fifteen minutes west and is free to walk across. The Cullman County Museum downtown covers the German-immigrant founding story of the town, and Cullman Depot Park in the downtown Warehouse District hosts Oktoberfest and Christkindlmarkt every year. Sportsman Lake Park is a three-minute drive from Lake Catoma if you've got kids along — train ride, pedal boats, putt-putt, splash pad. Smith Lake is about 25 minutes west if you want to swap the water-supply pool for bass-tournament water.
