The Water

Gantt Lake is Alabama Power's southern-tier hydroelectric pool — a 2,700-acre Conecuh River impoundment 9 miles north of Andalusia and roughly 30 miles above the Florida line. The dam was built in 1924 (with the plant in operation by the late 1920s), and the reservoir has been a quiet working-water fishery ever since. Per Alabama Travel, Gantt is the second-largest freshwater lake in south Alabama. The lake fishes shallow and cypress-rimmed through most of its length, with the deepest structure in the dam forebay and on the main river channel. Bass, bluegill, shellcracker (redear sunfish), crappie, and catfish all hold here; the Conecuh River inflow at the upper end pushes shad and baitfish through the pool year-round, and the cypress-edged coves concentrate spawning fish in March through May. Unlike the Coosa-Tallapoosa chain, Gantt sees almost no major-league tournament pressure, and the bite rewards anglers willing to read cypress cover and cypress stumps more than electronics.

Gantt Lake holds fish in patterns you can set your watch to. The bite isn't a secret — it's what most fishermen don't know about where the grass thins onto a hard ledge.

03 · The Calendar

Seasonal Playbook

March through May is the prime open window on Gantt. Water temps climb from the upper 50s through the 70s, pre-spawn largemouth stage on cypress-edge laydowns and creek-mouth points, and a jerkbait on ten-second pauses covers the staging fish. Crappie stack on cypress stumps and brush in 6-12 feet in the creek arms — minnows and 1/16-ounce jigs catch fish on every brush pile you can map. By late April, shellcracker (redear) move onto shallow sand-gravel flats along the cypress edges; the May full-moon spawn is the Gantt bream calendar highlight — cricket and red worm on 3-to-6-foot flats catch stringers. Largemouth spawn through April and May on cypress-edge flats on both sides of the pool. After heavy rain the upper end where the Conecuh enters fires on mudline fish — a square-bill crankbait on the clear-to-muddy seam.

Alabama Travel / Gantt Lake RV Park — official lake description

Gantt Lake fishery profile
Gantt Lake is a 2700 acre impoundment on the Conecuh River and is the second largest freshwater lake in south Alabama. Impounded since the 1930's as a hydroelectric generating dam, this lake has great fishing for Bass, Bluegill, Shell cracker, Crappie and Catfish.

The pattern: Gantt is Alabama Power's forgotten south-state pool. The same fishery mix that produces tournament fish on the Coosa — minus the tournament pressure. Read cypress cover, flip jigs to cypress trunks, and fish the cypress-edge laydowns the same way you'd fish Guntersville grass. Lower traffic, same fish, longer season.

Perfect camping location Gantt Lake for those who want to escape the harsh North winters for relaxing Southern climates year-round. Beach front, fishing piers and boat launches are located within the park.

The pattern: Gantt's 30-miles-to-the-Florida-line latitude means the bass stay catchable later into the fall and start earlier in the spring than central Alabama reservoirs. Snowbird anglers who winter in Florida can hit Gantt in February when Coosa is still locked in 46-degree water — a full 4-6 weeks of earlier pre-spawn than the middle of the state.

Dams of the World — Gantt Dam engineering record

Gantt Dam hydroelectric fact sheet
Gantt Dam on the Conecuh River in Alabama was built in 1924. Dam height 35 feet, length 1,200 feet, reservoir capacity approximately 14,645 acre-feet.

The pattern: A 35-foot dam with 14,645 acre-feet of storage is a small-footprint Alabama Power project. That means the dam forebay is compact — the deepest water on the lake is essentially one concentrated spot. In winter, that forebay stacks bass and catfish tightly. Drop-shot and hair-jig vertical on the rock, cut shad on the rip-rap — winter Gantt anglers run one spot and come home heavy.
