Gantt Lake Fishing: South Alabama's 2,700-Acre Conecuh Impoundment

March through May is the prime open window on Gantt. Water temps climb from the upper 50s through the 70s, pre-spawn largemouth stage on cypress-edge laydowns and creek-mouth points, and a jerkbait on ten-second pauses covers the staging fish. Crappie stack on cypress stumps and brush in 6-12 feet in the creek arms — minnows and 1/16-ounce jigs catch fish on every brush pile you can map. By late April, shellcracker (redear) move onto shallow sand-gravel flats along the cypress edges; the May full-moon spawn is the Gantt bream calendar highlight — cricket and red worm on 3-to-6-foot flats catch stringers. Largemouth spawn through April and May on cypress-edge flats on both sides of the pool. After heavy rain the upper end where the Conecuh enters fires on mudline fish — a square-bill crankbait on the clear-to-muddy seam.

June through August Gantt sets up on cypress shade and current. Largemouth hang tight to cypress trunks and shaded laydowns — a green-pumpkin tube flipped to shade, a frog on any sparse grass, a wacky Senko on cypress stumps. Bluegill and shellcracker spawn continues through June on shallow flats; cricket under a bobber on cypress edges catches hand-sized fish. Crappie slide deeper into the creek-arm brush in 10-15 feet by late July; spider-rigged jigs and minnows work the deep brush. Blue catfish on cut shad on the main channel hold through summer — the 15-to-30-foot ledges in the dam forebay and main Conecuh channel produce the biggest cats of the year. First-light topwater on creek mouths is the bass answer before the heat builds. Night catfishing on the main channel under a full moon pulls the heaviest flatheads of the year, and Gantt's latitude means the bite holds later into the evening than Central Alabama reservoirs.

September through November shad migrate out of the main river into the creek arms and every species follows. Largemouth chase shad on cypress edges, seawalls, and secondary creek-mouth points — a lipless crankbait ripped through sparse grass, a ChatterBait in shad color, a walking bait on calm mornings. Crappie reload on brush and timber in 8-14 feet in the tributary arms; long-line small jigs across cover to find the school, then vertical once marked. Bluegill stay active on cypress edges through September. Blue catfish continue on cut shad along the main channel. By mid-November the grass thins, the pool clears, and a slow-rolled spinnerbait becomes the late-fall largemouth answer on main-channel cypress edges. Fall is the easiest season for visiting anglers to put together a mixed-bag day on Gantt — the snowbird crowd at Gantt Lake RV Park starts arriving this season, and local tackle shops stock up on minnows and crickets.

December through February surface temps drop into the 50s and 40s, and Gantt empties out. Largemouth group on the Gantt Dam forebay and the deepest main-channel cypress edges — a suspending jerkbait on long pauses on sunny afternoons above 48°F, a hair jig vertical on the rock, a slow-rolled spinnerbait on the deepest available cypress. Crappie stack on deep brush in 15-22 feet in the tributary arms — tiny 1/32-ounce jigs tipped with minnows, fish vertical, wait for the tick. Blue catfish on cut shad along the main Conecuh channel stay reliable all winter — drift-rig the 20-to-30-foot bends for the biggest cats. When Alabama Power runs the hydro, current concentrates fish at the dam face and the Conecuh inflow at the top of the pool. Gantt's southern latitude means winter water runs 6-10 degrees warmer than Coosa-chain reservoirs at the same date, giving snowbird anglers a genuine pre-spawn bite in February.
