Lake Eufaula: The Big Bass Capital of the World

March through May is the trophy season on Eufaula. When surface temps climb into the low sixties, double-digit largemouth move off the main-river ledges and onto the shallow hydrilla flats in Barbour County and the upper lake. Pre-spawn fish in the fifty-eight to sixty-four degree range hold on the inside edge of hydrilla just outside the spawning flats — a big swimbait slow-rolled six inches under the canopy or a flipping jig punched through the mat gets bit. Spawning pockets in the creek arms off Chewalla Creek and the Eufaula NWR backwaters see the clearest water on the lake; sight-fishing on light fluorocarbon is the spring method when fish are on beds in two to five feet. The biggest fish of the year come from March through late April. By May the post-spawn bite shifts to topwater early and swimjig all day on the outside grass edge. The lake has hosted 17 B.A.S.S. events and the spring window has produced more winning patterns than any other season.

June through August the hydrilla thickens and the offshore ledge bite peaks simultaneously. Punch rigs — 1.5 to 2-ounce tungsten weights driving a compact craw through the mat — are the workhorse presentation when hydrilla stacks up in six to twelve feet. Frog fishing over the mat at first and last light adds topwater action. When the mat bite slows mid-day, fish move deeper: the old Chattahoochee River channel in 20-40 feet holds summer bass on football jigs and deep-diving crankbaits. Current from Corps of Engineers generation at Walter F. George Dam moves fish onto the ledge breaks; when discharge stops, fish scatter back into the mats. Night fishing on the Lakepoint State Park grass flats and around the US-431 bridge pilings near Eufaula produces in July and August — a dark-colored swimjig or a jig-head swimbait slow-wound along the mat edge gets bit when daytime surface temps push ninety degrees.

September through November shad pull off the main lake into the creek arms and the hydrilla edge bite fires again. A lipless crankbait ripped through dying grass, a ChatterBait on the outside edge, and a swimjig on the secondary points all produce as water cools from the low eighties into the sixties. October is the sweet spot — grass still present, water 68-74°F, bass in reaction mode. Walking baits and poppers on the outside grass line at first light mirror the Wheeler Lake fall pattern but with bigger fish on average. Stripers push up from the main river and suspend near shad balls — pencil poppers and inline spinners cast into surface busts. The lake's 640-mile shoreline means there's always a protected lee bank in fall wind; work the calm side in the morning and flip to the exposed bank in the afternoon.

December through February the best fishing on Eufaula moves to the main-channel ledges and the Walter F. George Dam tailrace. Largemouth stack on the old river channel in 25-40 feet — an Alabama rig in shad colors, a big swimbait slow-rolled on a heavy jig head, and a deep-diving crankbait all produce cold-water schools when surface temps fall below 55°F. The tailrace below Walter F. George Dam at Fort Gaines holds catfish, stripers, and bass on current breaks year-round; live shad or skipjack is the cold-water catfish play. Crappie move to deep timber and brush in the creek arm mouths — vertical jigging with a 1/8-ounce tube jig tipped with a minnow at 18-28 feet is the cold-water crappie pattern. Winter Eufaula is low-pressure, uncrowded, and can produce the heaviest single fish of the year when a front passes and the largemouth stack tight on the break.
