DeKalb County Public Fishing Lake sits on top of Sand Mountain, one mile north of Sylvania and about twenty minutes from the rim of Little River Canyon. 120 surface acres, one of 20 Public Fishing Lakes the ADCNR Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division operates under Alabama Code 220-2-.36. Stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, and crappie — a classic Sand Mountain small-impoundment fishery. Amenities stack up more than most PFLs: boat ramp, covered fishing piers, pavilions, restrooms, concessions, campsites on site, and rental boats. March through May is the prime window on Sand Mountain. Water warms faster than the big Tennessee River lakes because DeKalb PFL is a shallow 120-acre bowl — the bite turns on earlier in the year than on Guntersville or Wheeler. Bluegill bed on shallow gravel from late April through May and take a cricket or red wiggler under a bobber off the covered piers. Redear hit red wigglers a little deeper along the same shoreline. Largemouth stage into the upper end and tributary inflow in March, spawn through April; work a wacky-rigged Senko, a square-bill, and a small spinnerbait on timber edges. Crappie move into brush and submerged timber in early March; long-line a 1/16-ounce jig through brush piles, vertical over marked schools. Channel catfish turn on as water climbs past 65°F — chicken liver or nightcrawler on a slip-sinker rig off the pier in late afternoon. All anglers 16 through 64 need an Alabama fishing license plus an ADCNR State Public Fishing Lakes permit.
June through August the 120-acre pool warms into the 80s and the bite moves early-and-late. The covered fishing piers are the secret weapon here — shade on a Sand Mountain afternoon matters, and bluegill stay stacked on pier pilings all summer with a cricket under a bobber or a black-and-chartreuse beetle spin. Largemouth work shoreline wood at first light, pull off into the main pool through midday on a Texas-rigged worm and a drop-shot, then feed again at dusk. Channel catfish are at their best — nightcrawlers, chicken liver, or cut shad on the bottom off the pier as the sun drops. Campsites on site make an overnight weekend work: fish the piers at dawn, grill at camp, hike Little River Canyon or DeSoto Falls in the middle of the day, come back for the evening bite. Rental jon boats cover anglers without a trailer.
September through November is the transition window on Sand Mountain. Water drops through the 70s into the 60s by late October, bass push back into the shallows to feed up, and the shad bite turns on. A lipless crankbait and a ChatterBait along the shoreline and a white spinnerbait on timber edges catch bass feeding ahead of winter. Crappie stack on brush piles and timber in 8-15 feet — vertical jig with a minnow on a 1/16-ounce hair jig. Bluegill and redear hold on deeper brush and pier pilings into October. Channel catfish keep biting while water stays above 60°F. Fall is the best hiking window on the canyon rim, too — canyon maples and hickories turn, Little River Canyon Rim Parkway overlooks open up, and a mixed weekend of pier fishing plus canyon hiking is the move.
December through February the bite slows but the lake stays fishable on warm days. Crappie school up in the deeper main pool on brush piles — vertical-jig a 1/16-ounce hair jig tipped with a minnow when sonar marks the school. Bass slow down but a slow-rolled jig or an Alabama rig on the main-pool edges will pull a bite on a warming-trend afternoon. Catfish stay catchable on cut bait off the pier when water temps hold above 50°F. DeKalb PFL does not run a winter trout program like Madison County PFL — this is a year-round bass, bream, catfish, and crappie lake. Sand Mountain winters are colder than the valley; pick a warm-front afternoon, fish the main pool, and plan a half-day on the water with an afternoon at DeSoto Falls or Fort Payne's Alabama Fan Club museum. Personal boats require a State Public Fishing Lakes permit plus a launch permit, and the angler must be purposely fishing. ADCNR PFL rules restrict gasoline outboards to slow trolling / no-wake speed. Rental jon boats are available through the concessions building under the standard PFL Boat Rental Permit. DirectionsDeKalb County Public Fishing Lake is one of 20 State-Owned Public Fishing Lakes operated by the ADCNR Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division under Alabama Code 220-2-.36. Only hook and line with natural or artificial bait is permitted — no trotlines, set hooks, jugs, snagging, or snatching. Live bait minnows are restricted to goldfish minnows, golden shiners, and fathead minnows (no releasing minnows into the lake). Gasoline outboards are allowed only at slow trolling / no-wake speed where posted. No swimming, no wading, no alcohol, and no hunting on PFL land (designated wildlife sanctuaries). Fishing is sunrise to sunset on posted operating days. All creel, possession, and size limits are posted at the lake per Alabama Code 220-2-.36 section 4 — verify before keeping fish.
