Crappie spawn when the water reaches about 58–65°F, after staging on creek channels at 50–58°F — in Alabama, that is usually March, starting earlier in the south and on shallow, stained lakes.

Crappie spawn in Alabama
Most Alabama crappie spawn in March. Shallow, stained lakes and the pockets on the north side of a lake — which face south and catch the afternoon sun — warm first; big, clear lakes run a week or two later. The spawn spreads over several weeks because not every fish moves at once — a cold front can push them back out to 8–10 ft for a few days.
Chartreuse combinations in stained water; smoke or pearl in clear water.
4–6 lb high-vis mono on a 10–12 ft jig pole lets you dip vertically into wood without casting.
Dark, heavily coloured males arrive first and guard the area. Females come in on the warmest days and leave fast.
